IIT, BHU, Varanasi

After the establishment of the Indian Institutes of Technology, the three premier engineering institutions of our University viz., BENCO, MINMET and TECHNO were merged to form the Institute of Technology (IT-BHU) to provide a strong and integrated educational base. Thus our Institute came into fullfledged existence in 1971. To preserve its excellence and national character, the earlier system of region-wise admission (via merit lists) has been replaced by admission procedures through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE of the IITs) for undergraduate courses and Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE conducted by the IITs & IISc.) for the post-graduate courses. The Institute has so far produced more than 22000 B.Tech. graduates, 2700 M. Techs. and 650 Doctoral degree holders.

Since its formation, the Institute of Technology has not only developed to become a premier educational institution producing graduate engineers with sound scientific and technological background, but has grown into a Centre which provides versatile postgraduate training and conducts advanced research in Engineering and Technology. A large number of alumni of the Institute are occupying top positions in many leading industries, educational institutions and research establishments in India and abroad. Many of them have established their own industries/ companies and several are serving in diverse Governmental Departments/Agencies.

Admission to Four-Year B.Tech./B.Pharm. programmes, Five-Year Dual Degree Programmes and Five-Year Integrated Master Degree Progammes are made through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted jointly by the IITs, Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University and the Indian School of Mines University, Dhanbad. For admission to 4-Year B.Pharm. programme 50% seats are filled through JEE and 50% through PMT/PAT conducted by the University.

Admission to Two-Year M.Tech./M.Pharm. Programmes is made on the basis of GATE Score. In addition, there is provision of admitting sponsored candidates from academic institutions, industries and R&D organizations.

Admission to Ph.D. programmes is made on the basis of GATE/NET scores and through sponsorship by the employer.

Foreign nationals residing in India or aborad are admitted only to the post graduate and Ph.D. programmes under (a) self-financing scheme, and (b) cultural exchange fellowship programme. Under the self-financing scheme, some seats are filled by Director admission of eligible qualified foreign nationals, as sponsored candidates from their home countires.
